What happened
The Kings said Ben Simmons tore his right Achilles during a live drill in Sunday practice, and an MRI led the team to announce he will have surgery.
Sacramento also said the veteran guard had been expected to back up rookie Darius Acuff Jr., and the Kings open the regular season Wednesday at the Clippers after Simmons played two preseason games.
Simmons' surgery removes a veteran option from Sacramento's guard rotation right before opening night. The team has not said who will absorb those minutes.
